Royals Come Up Just Short In Nail-Biter Against Coker

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (3-17, 1-14 SAC) fought hard, but came up just short against the Coker Cobras (8-13, 7-8 SAC) by a score of 55-52 on Wednesday, February 3, 2016.

McKell Oliverio and Carmen Richardson led the way for Queens as they put in 13 points apiece. Maggie Stewart was strong on the boards as she collected 12 rebounds in the game to go along with her eight points.

The Royals jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the opening minutes of the game, but Coker had other plans as they would go on an 18-4 run that extended until the 1:52 minute mark, giving them 20-11 lead. Oliverio and the Royals would have an answer as they darted out to a 10-0 run to take a 21-20 lead with just over seven minutes to play in the first half. Both teams would keep it close for the remainder of the second quarter as Stewart's jumper with 12 seconds left made the score 30-27 in favor of Coker at the half.

Down by only three at the half, the Royals slowly worked their way back into the lead as Richardson's layup gave them a 37-36 lead with 5:39 to play in the third quarter. Queens held a lead for the remainder of the third quarter and into the fourth until Coker's Danielle Luczak would lay the ball in to tie the game at 42-42. Coker would grab the lead seconds later as Sydney Shull drained a three pointer with 9:01 remaining in the game. The Royals battled for the lead for the rest of the game, as they would find themselves down by only two points with the ball and about 15 seconds left in the game. Unfortunately the Royals would turn the ball over with ten seconds to go as Karlesha Thompson was called for a travelling violation, giving the ball back to Coker. Kiara Shoats made one of two free throws with four seconds to go in the game and the Royals put up a desperation shot as time expired, but it was no good as Queens fell to Coker 55-52.

Sydney Shull was the Cobras highest scoring player as she added 12 points. The only other Coker player to score in double digits was Danielle Luczak as she scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds.

Queens will hit the road on Saturday, February 6th as they will face off against Brevard. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
