Box Score 2 Dunkin, S.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (5-7 overall) opened the Mid-South Classic with a 5-2 win over the Augusta (7-13 overall) and a 3-0 loss to No. 22 North Georgia (13-4).
It was all Queens until the sixth inning as the Royals held a 5-0 lead, starting with a RBI from
Abby Lathan to give
Elaina Frantellizzi the chance to score. A sacrifice fly into center field from
Lyndey McCurry put the second run on the board as
Sydney Ditto ran home from third base.
Heading into the fourth inning with a 3-0 lead, Queens extended their hold on the game producing two fruitful plays.
Miranda Cummings hit a sacrifice fly to allow
Taylor Cheek to cross the plate before a triple from
Samantha Martinez shot Lathan and Cummings around the bases for the final scoring play for Queens.
Catelyn Presley kept the Jaguars off the board until the sixth inning as Carolyn Edwards hit a two-run homerun to put her team on the scoreboard. Presley went 5.1 innings to take the win for the team moving to a 2-2 record.
Evie Scott came into the game to pitch 1.2 innings, giving up no hits and taking a strikeout.
Emily Hittinger (1-2) took the loss for the team going 3.1 innings with seven hits, five runs and only one strikeout.
The Royals would see North Georgia in their second game containing the 22
nd-ranked team to just the third inning. Back-to-back singles in the third, gave North Georgia a 3-0 lead that would decide the game.
Queens would see three hits, leaving four runners on base. McCurry (0-3) pitched all six innings for the team giving up seven hits and forcing seven Nighthawks to be stranded on base.
Poole took the win for the team to maintain an undefeated 12-0 pitching record. She tallied 13 strikeouts.
Royals see day two of the tournament tomorrow facing Bellarmine at 12 p.m., followed by Armstrong State at 2 p.m.
