. - The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team kicked off their South Atlantic Conference play this afternoon defeating the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial University 20-8 to improve to 4-1 on the year. The Railsplitters fall to 2-1 after being handed their first loss of the season.
The Royals wasted no time grabbing the lead over Lincoln Memorial in today's game, with the first two goals coming within the first 24 seconds of the game, with
Spencer Corkery opening up the scoring followed by
Jesse Oliver. The Railsplitters took advantage of an extra man opportunity, with Dylan Neisler managing to bundle the ball into the back of the net. The Royals regained controlled to see the first quarter out, scoring three consecutive goals coming from Corkery,
Garrett Chan, and
Garrett Sadler to put Queens up 5-1 at the end of the first.
Jack Smith got the Royals going once more with a goal with 8:28 to play in the second. The Railsplitters responded with a string of goals of their own, coming from Billy Kopsky, Adam Golia, and Neisler. However, the Royals once again found their form closing out the half with two additional goals from Oliver and
Griffin Stechmiller to go into the half leading 10-5.
Both teams came out of break in a rather cautious manner totaling only three goals in the third. Sadler double his tally by opening up the scoring in the third. Railsplitters then responded with a goal by Justin Stewart, only to be shot down 49 seconds later with a goal from
Gavin Perry of the Royals. Queens led 12-6 at the end of the third.
In contrast to the third quarter, the fourth was packed with goals featuring eight from the Royals and only two from the Railsplitters. Sadler once again started the scoring with an unassisted goal, which was later followed by two more giving him five for the day. Karios Bodley scored a consolation goal, with 12:08 to play only to be followed by five consecutive goals from the Royals.
Sadler and Corkery led on the field with five points apiece, as Sadler totaled at five goals and Corkery tallied four goals and an assist. Olliver and Smith followed with three points each. Olliver would score three goals while Smith took two and an assist. The Royals won on face-offs 22-9.
Eric Dolan recorded 10 saves in the win.
Queens outshot Lincoln Memorial, 48-42, with 32 on frame while only 21 hit the target for the Railsplitters. The Royals also totaled 36 ground balls to Lincoln Memorials 24.
Adam Golia led the Railsplitters effort with three goals and one assist. Joe Medel totaled nine saves.
Queens returns to action away at Catawba College on Saturday, March 5, at 1 p.m.
