Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte, ranked 20
th in the nation in men's lacrosse, hosted No. 16 Belmont Abbey College this afternoon defeating the Crusaders 16-10 to improve to 3-1 on the year. The Crusaders fall to 2-1 after being handed their first loss of the season.
The Royals wasted no time grabbing the lead over Belmont Abbey in today's game, opening things with five straight goals. After Queen's leading goal scorer,
Garrett Sadler, capitalized on a man-up opportunity at 12:49, the Royals were on a roll as
Vincent Valenza, Austin King and Jesse Olliver followed suit. Olliver found the back of the net twice in the period just before the Crusaders closed with two goals to give the game a 5-2 score heading into the second.
After Sadler got the Royals going once more with a goal at 13:39 in the second, both teams traded goals. Queens took an 8-5 lead into the halftime break as a result.
Out of the break, Queens' offense took off once more as they opened with four consecutive goals to stretch their lead out to seven, 12-5, with 10:42 to play. The Crusaders would put a stop to Queens' run with a pair of goals, but a man-up goal scored by Chan with 2:59 on the clock gave the home team the last word. The goal was Chan's second man-up goal of the period.
Chan opened the final period with an unassisted goal, before Belmont Abbey answered with a three goal spurt to cut the Royals' lead to four, 14-10, with 2:03 to play. However, Chan had one more left in him to give the senior five on the day, and
Spencer Corkery would add another to put the nail in the coffin before the final horn sounded.
Chan led all on the field with seven points today on five goals and two assists. Olliver and Sadler followed with three goals apiece.
Jonathan Paige won 18-of-21 face-offs and totaled 17 ground balls.
Eric Dolan recorded 20 saves in the win after coming up with a number of huge plays down the stretch.
Queens outshot Belmont Abbey, 48-43, though both teams put 30 shots on goal each. The Royals also totaled 36 ground balls to Belmont Abbey's 21, and 23 face-off wins to Belmont Abbey's five.
Adam Wiedemann led the Crusaders' effort with four goals. Harley Whitham totaled 14 saves.

Queens returns to action at home against Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game against the Railsplitters will open South Atlantic Conference play for the Royals.
