Box Score SALISBURY, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (4-20, 2-17 SAC) struggled to keep pace in the second half with the Catawba Indians (14-11, 11-8 SAC) as the Royals fell to the Indians by the score of 73-58 on Wednesday, February 17, 2016.
The Royals shot 45.1 percent from the field including going 7-of-15 from three-point range. Queens caused 18 turnovers and turned them into offense, scoring 17 points off of turnovers. The Royals were out-rebounded by Catawba in the game 24-14.
Sheridan Pressley scored a career-high 23 points off of the bench for the Royals. Pressley was 8-of-14 from the field, 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, and added three assists and three steals in the game.
McKell Oliverio was the only other Royal to add double digit points as she put in 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting for Queens.
In the opening minutes of the game, the teams would find themselves knotted up at seven as
Erin Brundage hit a jumper with 5:49 remaining in the first quarter. Catawba would then work into the lead as they used a 6-2 run that was capped by a Brianna Hodges layup to give the Indians a 17-12 lead at the end of the first period. The lead would remain the same at the 4:40 mark of the second quarter as Oliverio's jumper made the score 24-19 in favor of the Indians. Moments later, the Royals would go on a 9-0 scoring spurt that was capped by a Pressley three pointer to give the Royals a 28-27 lead with 44 seconds remaining in the half. Catawba's Bri Johnson hit a three pointer with just two seconds left to give them back the lead, 30-28, going into the half.
The Royals would struggle to stop the Indians in the third quarter, as they would get outscored 29-18 in the period. Catawba opened the second half with a 9-2 run to take a 39-32 lead with 7:11 to go in the third quarter. Oliverio's three pointer at the 4:33 mark of the third quarter cut the Royals deficit down to six points, 44-38. The Indians would then turn on the heat offensively as they outscored the Royals 19-8 over the next six minutes to take a 63-46 lead with 8:31 remaining in the fourth quarter. Queens worked to cut the lead down to only ten points, 66-56 with just over four minutes remaining in the game as Oliverio hit another jumper, but Catawba would shut down the Royals offense from there on out, allowing them to score only two points for the rest of the game as they took home the 73-58 win.
Bri Johnson added 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting and gathered seven rebounds in the game. Two other Catawba players added double digit points as Jada Huntley added 19 and Alexis Newbold scored 12 on 6-of-6 shooting in the game.
The Royals will return home on Saturday, February 20th as they play host to Lincoln Memorial at 2:00 p.m. On Saturday, the Royals will be celebrating their seniors on Senior Day as well as showing their support for the fight against cancer with Play4Kay.
