Royals Drop Game To Carson-Newman On The Road

Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (3-15, 1-12 SAC) fell to the Carson-Newman Eagles (15-5, 9-5 SAC) 73-53 on Saturday, January 30, 2016 in a game that saw the lead change hands 17 times.
 
The Royals shot 34.6 percent from the floor and made 7-of-16 three point baskets. Queens and Carson-Newman were almost even on the boards as the Eagles outrebounded the Royals by only one, 34-33. Carson-Newman was able to score nine fast break points in the game and dished out 26 assists on 29 made shots.
 
Leading the way for Queens was Erin Brundage, who scored a team high 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting and added four rebounds and three assists. Carmen Richardson added 12 points and eight rebounds in the game and Sheridan Pressley scored 11 points for the Queens in the game.
 
The start of the game was very competitive with neither team being able to get out a lead of larger than two points. Brundage nailed a three pointer with 3:16 remaining in the first quarter to give Queens a 7-5 lead. At the end of the first quarter, Pressley made a jumper with one second left make the score 15-14 in favor of the Royals. The Royals lead grew to as large as five points in the second quarter, as they held a 31-26 lead with 3:36 left until halftime. The Eagles would answer as they went on a 9-0 run to end the quarter, giving them a 35-31 lead going into the half following a layup by Cupples as the clock expired.
 
Carson-Newman came out strong in the second half, outscoring the Royals 22-8 in the third period. Queens was down by only four points, 37-33, with 8:42 remaining in the third quarter following a layup by Richardson. The Eagles responded by going on two runs in the quarter, a 6-0 run and a 9-0 run to break the game open and give them an 18-point, 57-39 lead with 1:57 remaining in the third quarter. Carson-Newman's lead grew to as large as 25 points in the second half as the score was 66-41 following a three-pointer by Burstrom. The Royals would answer as they went on a 12-2 run to close the gap down to only 15 points but there wasn't enough time left on the clock as the Eagles would defeat the Royals 73-53.
 
Carson-Newman was led by Taylor Peterson who scored 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with four rebounds. Tatum Burstrom was also a key player as she added 14 points and made four three-pointers to go along with four rebounds.
 
The Royals will return back home to the Levine Center on Monday, February 1st as they play host to the Anderson Trojans with tip-off slated for 6:00 p.m.
