Royals Drop in Five Sets to Newberry

Box Score Newberry, S.C. –Queens University of Charlotte volleyball (1-5, 0-2 SAC) battled the Newberry College Wolves (5-2, 1-1 SAC) on Saturday, September 12, 2015, taking the match into five sets. The Wolves would come out victorious going 26-24, 20-25, 16-25, 25-18, 15-13 in the match, despite the Royals tallying 63 kills to the Wolves 46.  

The first set saw the Royals leading for the majority of the game but a small serge from Newberry gave the Wolves the set. The second and third sets were controlled by the Royals who dominantly took them 25-20 and 25-16, respectively.

In the second set Queens pushed to a 10-4 lead and although the Wolves fought, the Royals never let their opponent come within more than three points.  

Unlike the second set, Set 3 started on an even pace as both teams worked their way to a 5-5 score. Queens forced the timeout after the squad took an additional three unanswered points to bring them ahead 8-5.  The two teams would remain close until the end, with two runs from the Royals deciding the set. The first run was a 7-2 stretch that put Queens ahead 19-13. The second run capped the game as Queens took five unanswered.  

An early lead by Newberry put the Royals at bay in the fourth set as the team searched but could not make up the ground. The fall in the fourth set would have the Royals facing the deciding set to determine the match.

Queens and Newberry sat equal through the tenth point in Set 5. Newberry found their gap with a 4-1 run to place them one point shy of the match. Queens managed to secure two more points but a kill by Alexus Horton concluded the day.

Meredith Jones contributed 22 kills to tie her career high. Jones would go on to have three service aces and 13 digs for the night. Taylor Henry topped the team in blocks tallying nine. She would also have seven kills and a service ace.

Logan Hayward led the Wolves in kills with 19 and in digs with 24.  Maggie Marsh tallied 37 assists and 12 digs for Newberry.

Queens will face Lincoln Memorial in their next match as the Royals head back home. Queens is set to face the Railsplitters at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 18th. The match will also feature the Queens men's and women's swim teams as they are presented with their national championship rings.
