Box Score 2 Newberry, S.C. – Queens University of Charlotte softball (10-28, 5-11 SAC) took the come-from-behind victory in game two against Newberry (26-17, 10-6 SAC) on Wednesday, April 08, 2015, to split the series with the Wolves. Trailing by one in the top of the seventh, the Royals found two runs to give them the second matchup 3-2. The team also took a late run in the first game to even the score at 1-1 and force an extra inning however, Newberry took the win with a run in the eighth for a 2-1 score.
Game two found a run early with Newberry capitalizing in the first inning off a single from Ann Dee Priest to bring home Mallory Gerndt. Finding the tie,
Elaina Frantellizzi took the RBI with a hit through the left-hand side of the field to bring
Robyn Levine home from third base. However, a homerun from Maude McCourry put the Royals behind late in the game. Heading into their last at bat, Queens produced more than just a tying run.
Kayla Hall took over at first for
Abby Lathan who found a one base hit into left field.
Amanda Meade would put Hall into scoring position, also with a hit into left field, before taking an out on the next play. Driving towards home plate, Hall forced a throwing error, giving her the score and evening things up. Levine would soon follow, running off a hit from
Whitney Britt to the second baseman.
Lyndey McCurry, backed by the Royals' defense, retired the Wolves in order to cap the game.
A defensive battle started the double-header as both teams remained scoreless throughout most of game one. Newberry struck first grabbing their run in the bottom of the sixth, beginning with a triple down the right field line from Gabby Bedard. Next batter up, Mallory Gerndt found a single into left field to grab the RBI and break the silence with a run. Fearing the game would conclude with a 1-0 score, Queens rallied in the top of the seventh, finding their break in spite of two outs. Hall, who came in to run for McCurry, moved from second to third base off a wild pitch giving Britt the chance to bring her home. Britt's hit went through the right side providing just enough time for Hall to cross the plate.
Catelyn Presley saw three Wolves retire, with the help of her defense, in the bottom of the seventh to force the game into extra innings. Unable to find a run in the top of the 8
th, Newberry's Ashlen Ayres, who was placed on second base due to extra inning rules, took the win for the team advancing from third base off a throwing error.
Evie Scott stood the mound for the first 5.1 innings of game one, giving up eight hits but only one earned run. She would also have two strikeouts. Presley came in as the relief pitcher to finish out the remaining 2.0 innings of the first matchup. Despite giving up no hits, Presley would hold the loss moving to a 3-10 pitching record. She gave up no hits, had one unearned run, and grabbed a strike out. Presley returned for game two seeing 5.1 innings of the game. During her time on the mound she gave up seven hits, two runs, three walks, and took one strikeout. McCurry (5-7) would finish the game with 1.2 innings pitch, two hits, and no runs.
Maude McCourry (9-3) found the first game win going all eight innings for seven hits, one run, three walks and a strikeout. She faced 32 Royals batters. Brittany Middleton (5-6) was the game two pitcher for the Wolves standing on the mound for all seven innings. Her time saw eight hits, three runs and five strikeouts.
The Royals face Anderson at home on Saturday, April 11, for a conference double-header beginning at 1 p.m. The game will also be the teams Bark in the Park fundraiser for the Humane Society as the Royals welcomes their four legged friends out to Park Road Park.
