Queens takes the loss to Catawba

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Charlotte, N.C. – Going up against one of the top pitchers in the conference, Queens University of Charlotte softball team (14-18, 3-7 SAC) was rattled by the Indians of Catawba College (17-13-6-6) dropping the double-header on Wednesday, April 01, 2015. Catawba took an early lead in both games to secure a 6-3 score in the first game and an 8-2 score in the second.

Working the strike zone, Carley Tysinger (13-7) found 16 strikeouts against the Royals to give her a total of 183 for the year. She currently sits at ninth in the nation for the category. She gave up three earned runs in the first game and nine hits. In the second game, she gave up two runs, only one earned, off of four hits. She would stand the mound as the sole Catawba pitcher for the double-header.

Game one began with the Indians finding five runs in their first at bat. Despite both teams putting runners on base, the score remained the same until the top of the fifth when Taylor Adams hit a solo homerun over the left field wall. Queens would not be able to find an answer until the next inning. Lyndey McCurry found her way to second base off a hit into right field. Hanna Hasker would mover her into score position off a bunt down the first base line setting up a sacrifice fly from Amanda Meade on the next at bat. Elaina Frantellizzi took the second run for the Royals taking base off a hit-by-pitch before reaching third off of a double from Robyn Levine. Frantellizzi scored the third run taking advantage of a wild pitch.

Game two also saw an early lead from the Indians as the team took seven runs by the end of the second inning. Catawba would add one more off a throwing error for an unearned run by Natalie Naturile.  Although they were down, the Royals continued to battle finding their break in the bottom of the fifth. Meade took the run as Frantellizzi doubled into right field. The next inning Samantha Martinez grabbed the second run, shooting to home on a wild pitch.

Queens had three players take the mound for the double-header. McCurry (3-7) pitched all seven innings in game one giving up five hits, six runs with only five earned, and taking three strikeouts. Whitley Baker (1-5) took the loss in game two with one inning pitched for seven runs. Evie Scott took the mound as the relief pitcher going the remaining six innings with six hits, one run, and two strikeouts.

The team's next game features the Mars Hill Lions. Queens will host the Lions on Friday, April 3, for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
