Box Score 2 Charlotte, N.C. - Queens University of Charlotte softball (9-22, 3-5 SAC) found a 5-4 second game win against the Tornados of Brevard College (8-14, 2-8 SAC) on Saturday, March 28, 2015, to kept their .500 home record alive and split the series with Brevard.
The second game saw the Royals jump out into an early 3-0 lead starting with
Jasmyn Lindsay bringing
Taylor Rosenbalm home from second base for a first inning run. The second inning started with a double from
Amanda Meade before
Lyndey McCurry found a gap up the middle of the field. McCurry found her own run a few plays later taking, advantage of a passed ball to put the team up 3-0. Brevard found their way onto the scoreboard in the top of the third as Kinny Davis took off from third off an Ashleigh Ivey single. However, Queens responded with two runs in the bottom of that same inning. Rosenbalm crossed the plate after a single was hit down the left side of the field by Meade followed by
Micaela Hayes taking advantage of a sacrifice bunt from McCurry to make the score 5-1. Things would remain quiet until the fifth inning where Kinsey Parrish hit a two-run homerun to bring the Tornados back into the game. Parrish found another late homerun in the top of the seventh to put one more on the score board with one out remaining in the game. Catelyn Pressley forced a popup from Casey Whitaker over to
Hanna Hasker on third base who made the catch to end the game.
Whitley Baker (1-4) would take credit for the win seeing her way through four innings, with eight hits, three earned runs, one strikeout, and no walks. Presley took her first save of the season coming into the game with three runs on the board. She pitched three innings, gave up one earned run, no strikes, and no walks.
Casey Whitaker (1-7) took the Tornados loss, pitching just one inning where the Royals found three runs and four hits.
The first game fell to Brevard, who found two double run innings to keep Queens at bay. The game started on an even note as Brevard's Whitaker found a hit into right field that sent Davis to home plate.
Taylor Cheek found a hole up the middle of the field sending
Venus Gonzalez around the bases to even things up. However the top of the third saw the Tornados put some distance on the scoreboard with Mary Cloninger scoring off a Royals' error. Davis took the second run of the inning off a single from Parrish. Both teams fought through the next few at bats before Brevard's Dallas Heaton singled into left field, bringing two runners home with the help of Lauren Parker capitalized on a fielding error. That would be the last scoring play of the game as Brevard took the 5-1 win.
Jamie Hrobak (6-5) grabbed the win for the Tornados, taking all seven innings on the mound. She faced 26 batters giving up only one run, three hits, seven strikeouts, and one walk.
Evie Scott (1-4) faced the loss going 4.2 innings with three earned runs off five total runs during her time. She also grabbed four strikeouts and gave up one walk. McCurry would come in as the relief pitcher for 2.1 innings with no runs, three hits, and five strikeouts.
Queens will be back at home on Wednesday, April 1, as the team hosts Catawba College for a 1:30 p.m. double-header start.
