Box Score 2 Wingate, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte softball (4-17, 0-1 SAC) took on the No. 19-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs (12-9, 2-1 SAC) on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 in a double-header that fell to the Bulldogs. Wingate took both games in five innings with the first falling with a 12-4 score and the second with an 8-0 score.
Two back-to-back six run innings capped the first game for the Bulldogs as the team jumped out to a 12-0 lead with their third at bat. Queens managed to grab four runs in the closing moments of the game with
Venus Gonzalez touching home plate after
Taylor Cheek won a pass to first with four balls. The fifth inning put three more runs on the board as
Samantha Martinez took advantage of an error.
Robyn Levine and
Whitney Britt worked their way around the bases moments later.
Game two started with three runners finding their way past all four bases as Alexis Burrell hit one over the right field wall. Their next at bat gave the Bulldogs three more runs. Mellena Helms, Burrell and Taylor Laskey each crossed home plate for the team to give them a 6-0 lead. Queens looked for a way around the Wingate defense but was unsuccessful only grabbing one hit off the pitching crew. Wingate would take two additional runs splitting them between the fourth and fifth innings.
Catelyn Pressley (3-6) took the loss for the Queens pitching crew going 1.2 innings giving up six hits, two earned runs, and grabbing a strike out. Houser (8-7) for Wingate pitch all five innings for six hits, four runs with only one earned, and three strikeouts.
The second game loss went to
Lyndey McCurry (1-6) taking nine hits for seven runs with four of them earned. During McCurry's four innings on the mound she grabbed two strikeouts and faced 26 batters. Miranda Paul (2-1) took the win giving up only one hit and three walks.
The Royals return home for their home opener this Saturday as the team hosts Tusculum (11-9, 1-1 SAC) for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m. The game serves as a fundraiser for the Humane Society as the team welcomes dogs to Park Road Park to enjoy the game.
