Royals edged by No. 9 Lakers at home

Box Score CHARLOTTE – The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team (4-4) welcomed No. 9 Mercyhurst University (2-1) to Dickson Field this afternoon falling 13-9 to the Lakers in a nonconference event.

Leading 8-7 at the break, the 14th ranked Royals were held to just one goal in the second half as the Lakers put six goals in the back of the net for the win.

Maggie Masters led Queens in goals with three as Kelly Dowd score two goals to follow. Abigail Paulus, the South Atlantic Conference leader in assist, led with three assists on the day. Brittany Larranaga totaled two ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers in the loss, while goalkeeper Danielle Horoschak totaled five saves in the net.

In the opening half of action both teams went head to head trading goals in the period. Queens held a 2-1 lead early after Dowd and Caity Hamilton scored back-to-back points, but the Lakers soon regained control with two consecutive goals from Carly Zimmerman. The game would be a back and forth affair from that point on with Queens' Jena Ready giving her team an 8-7 lead at the break on a free-position-shot with six seconds on the clock.

The Lakers' defense would cause problems for Queens' offense in the second half as they switched things up to apply more pressure on the ball. As a result, the Royals were held to just three shots on goal in the period compared to the 11 shots on goal tallied in the first. Queens' lone goal of the half was scored by Masters at 8:18. Meanwhile, Mercyhurst was able to score six goals, four coming from Olivia Keirn, to secure the win.

Queens was edged 22-20 in shots by the Lakers, and lost the ground ball battle 19-9. However, Queens was able to win the battle at the draw 13-10.

Keirn's four goals led the Lakers' offense today. Jenna Schlagenhauf added three goals and Zimmerman finished with two goals. Rebecca Muscella took the win in goal after recording five saves.

Queens is back at Dickson Field tomorrow in a South Atlantic Conference game against Brevard College at 4 p.m.
