Box Score ERIE, Pa. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse traveled to take on No. 12 Mercyhurst University this morning falling 15-5 to the Lakers. Queens, ranked 14
th in the nation, now holds a 2-4 record, while the Lakers picked up their first win of the season to sit 1-1.
Holding just a narrow 6-4 lead over the Royals at the half, Mercyhurst would outscore Queens 9-1 in the second half for the win.
Senior midfielder
Evan Farkas led the Royals today with two goals and one assist for three points.
Garrett Chan,
Jimmy Chickerella and
Justin Kestler scored Queens' remaining goals. Additionally,
Jonathan Paige won 8-of-16 face-offs, and totaled seven ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Eric Dolan took the loss in the net after recording 15 saves.
Both teams traded goals in the opening period giving the game a 2-2 score until the Lakers put back-to-back scores on the board to end the quarter with a 4-2 lead.
The Lakers then increased their lead to four, 6-2, after scoring consecutive goals in the second. Their first goal would come at 9:39 from James Crowe, and their second came late in the period with 1:38 on the clock. With the quarter coming to a close, Queens matched the Lakers' goals with two of their own in the final minute of action. Chan found the back of the net with 35 seconds on the clock, and Farkas followed with a man-up goal at the 20 second mark.
Out of the halftime break, Mercyhurst had the momentum scoring two goals not five minutes into play. Queens' Chickerella would bring the visiting Royals back within three, 8-5, scoring a goal with 5:27 to play, but the Lakers answered with four to close the quarter holding a 12-5 advantage. They then went on to score three goals in the fourth while holding Queens scoreless for the win.
Queens was outshot 46-21 in today's game, and lost the ground ball battle, 24-19. The Royals also committed 19 turnovers to Mercyhurst's nine.
Crowe finished play with five goals to lead the Lakers, while Trevor Vargo added four goals. Cory Becker notched two goals and three assists, and Keyan McQueen and Jon Antonio added two goals apiece. Michael Grace totaled six saves in goal for the win.
The Royals will be back in action on Saturday, March 7 at Mars Hill University. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
