Box Score 2 Savannah, Ga. - In a rematch of the previous day's schedule, Queens University of Charlotte softball (1-8) faced Mount Olive (5-3) and #8 Armstrong Atlantic (4-2) on Sunday, February 8, 2015, in day two of the Armstrong Atlantic Pirate Classic. The Royals dropped in both games seeing a 12-4 defeat in five innings against the Trojans and a 9-1 loss to the Pirates in six innings.
Queens started the day strong with a two runs in their first at bat before the Trojans immediate turned the tide finding eight runs. Mount Olive brought three more runners home in the third to take an 11-2 lead.
Taylor Rosenbalm showed strength hitting on for distance with the first home run of the year for a two-run home run in the fourth.
An even start befell the second game of the day for the Royals as the faced 8th-ranked Armstrong State. The game sat 1-1 after the first inning with
Taylor Cheek scoring the lone Queens' run. A three-run home run from Ashley Sterritt put the game at 4-1 in the bottom of the third. The Pirates took four more runs in the sixth inning to close out the day.
Lauren Smith (2-2) took the win for the Trojans as their one and only pitcher for the game. Although she allowed nine hits only four Royals found their way to home plate.
Evie Scott (0-1), who came to the mound in the first inning finished the game against Mount Olive, allowing only two hits against the Trojans in her 18 batters she faced. Cheek would be responsible for the Royals first scoring play with a single to left side that brought in two runners. The loss would go to
Katelyn Nigh (0-1).
In game two,
Lyndey McCurry (0-1) took the start for the team and the loss. In the 5.1 innings pitched for McCurry, she managed to strike out eight batters the most for the season so far.
Trzaska (2-1) took the win for the Pirates giving up seven hits, no walks, and five strikeouts.
Cheek had three hits for the weekend in addition to scoring a run.
The team heads to Belmont Abbey on Tuesday, February 10, for a double header. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
