Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team handed an 18-5 loss to Catawba College this afternoon at the Queens Sports Complex to improve their overall record to 2-0, and open up South Atlantic Conference play at 1-0. The Indians fall to 1-1 on the year with the loss, and 0-1 in the SAC.
Abigail Paulus led the Royals in points with six after recording three goals and three assists. The sophomore attacker now sits tied for second in the league in points with 11 this season.
Brittany Larranaga,
Kelly Dowd and
Becca Chen each totaled three points on two goals and one assist, while
Maggie Masters and
Alexandra Bruder netted two goals apiece.
Caity Hamilton,
Gabby Farina and
Nicole Forgione also notched two points each with a goal and an assist, while
Jena Ready and
Aarika Kaester chipped in with one goal apiece.
Defensively the Royals were led by
Sydney Dishman and Kaester, who each totaled two caused turnovers. Dishman also led in groundballs with four.
Danielle Horoschak totaled three saves in the opening 30 minutes of action to take the win in goal.
Caitlin Cavallaro tallied one save in 19:51, and Christinie Wiese played the final 10:09.
After Catawba's Caroline Beggs notched the first goal of the game at 27:25, the Royals would reel off 11 first half goals in a row engaging the running clock rule with 7:22 to play in the period. The Indians were only able to get six shots off in the half compared to Queens' 25.
The Royals continued their dominant play into the second period notching five goals just 10 minutes into play. The Indians were able to find their second goal of the day with 15:54 to play at the stick of Megan Shortt. They then notched two more, making the score 16-4 with 13:03 to play. The two teams then traded goals keeping the margin at 12 before Kaester closed the game with a free-position shot for her first goal of the season.
Queens outshot the Indians 41-12, and won 17 draw controls to Catawba's eight.
Beggs led Catawba with a hat trick and one assist, while Shortt totaled one goal and one assist. Bethany Davis totaled 11 saves in goal, while Madison Anselmo recorded four in the final 10:09.
The Royals are back in action at No. 5 Limestone College on February 26 at 6 p.m.
