Royals catch fire in the second half to take down No. 11 Pfeiffer

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After holding just a three-point lead at the half, No. 17 Queens University of Charlotte put 11 balls in the back of the net to run away with a 17-9 victory over No. 11 Pfeiffer University. The Royals open their season at 1-0 with the win while the Falcons begin their season at 0-1.
 
Queens' Jena Ready and Abigail Paulus led all on the field with five points apiece. Ready netted four goals and tallied an assist, while Paulus recorded a hat trick and two assists. Also recording hat tricks on the day for Queens were Kelly Dowd and Maggie Masters. Dowd and Masters each notched an assist as well. Brittany Larranaga totaled two goals.
 
Pfeiffer would strike first in the opening minute of play as Cheyenne Green put her team on the board after receiving a pass from Gracie Herbert, but the Falcons' lead was short lived as the Royals answered with four goals in a row to lead 4-1 with 17:46 on the clock. Paulus scored twice during the run for Queens.
 
The Falcons would finally put their second point on the board after a yellow card forced the Royals to play a man-down just under the 10 minute mark. Green then scored her second of the day to bring her team within one of Queens, 4-3, with 5:28 left in the half. However, the Royals had one more push in the form of back-to-back goals from Kelly Dowd and Alexander Bruder to head into the locker room ahead 6-3.
 
After two quick goals from the Falcons at the start of the second gave the game a 6-5 score, Brittany Larranaga scored two consecutive goals to keep her team ahead. The Royals then outscored Pfeiffer 4-1 over the next five minutes of action to extend their lead to six, 12-6, with 20:18 on the clock.
 
Following a Pfeiffer goal from Kristi Korn at 19:33 that brought the Falcons within five, 12-7, the Royals reeled off five straight goals to secure their win. Ready netted three unassisted goals during the run.
 
Queens dominated the Falcons offensively outshooting Pfeiffer 38-13 today. Queens also won the battle for ground balls 15-12 with Bridgette Larranaga's five ground balls leading the way. Additionally, the Royals won 16 draw controls to Pfeiffer's 12. Ready led all on the field with eight draw controls. Danielle Horoschak took the win in goal after totaling three saves.
 
Green and Korn led the Falcons with three goals apiece today, while Jacqueline Kennedy added two goals. Cassidy Wilson totaled 16 saves in goal.
 
Queens is back in action on February 21 at home against Catawba College at 4 p.m.
