Queens unable delay Wingate

Box Score Wingate, N.C. –  In a narrow defeat to Wingate University (17-7, 15-2 SAC), Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball (5-17, 3-14 SAC) managed to hold the lead for the majority of the game against the tied, top South Atlantic Conference team. Although the Bulldogs took the game 50-44, the Royals never out of reach holding the Bulldogs to their second lowest score of the year and their lowest within conference play.

Fouls would be the difference in the game as Queens gave the Bulldogs 32 attempts from the line. However, the Royals defense held strong as Wingate only made 14 of their 50 field goal attempts. Abby Pettit led the team grabbing seven points and nine rebounds. Singletary continued to climb in blocks per game, currently seated at sixth in the nation, as she took two more for the Royals. Singletary also posted seven points for the night. Thompson finished the night with eight points with two steals.

Two Bulldogs worked their way into double-digits with Morgan McGee coming out on top with 13 points. Andrea Bertrand found the 10 points to contribute to the Wingate score. Wingate's Brittany Hill and Chantal Dunbar each took four steals in the game. The Bulldogs took zero blocks against the Queens' offense.

An immediate start from Thompson found an open lane with just 20 seconds running off the clock from tip-off. It would be over two minutes before either team found a basket with Queens breaking the dry spell with a three-point play from Singletary. A 6-0 run gave the team their largest lead of the half as Erin Brundage capped the drive to put the team in front 15-6. As the game drew closer to the half, Wingate slowly chipped away at the Royals' lead finding their tie at 3:18 to play. Free-throws ensured the tying point for the Bulldogs as they made five of eight heading into the halftime to make it a 22-22 game.

Mirroring the quick start from Queens in the first half, Hill charged the basket to give Wingate their first lead of the game with 19:50 on the clock. Although Wingate held their lead for five minutes, Pettit brought the game to 30-30. As the two teams battled in a half that saw eight tying points, a steal from Hill gave Kelli Bonner a look from distance for a three-point lead. Wingate would not concede the score for the remainder of the game. Queens maintained their pressure staying within one possession until less than four minutes remained in the game. However, Queens would only be able to find a free-throw from Singletary before the buzzer sounded.

The Royals return home on Saturday, February 14, for Homecoming. The game also represents the Play 4Kay game, a foundation dedicated to women's cancer research and named in honor of Head Coach Susan Yow's older sister, Kay Yow. The Royal host Mars Hill for the day with tip-off scheduled for 4 p.m.
