Box Score Belmont, N.C. – Late runs in both innings swayed the double-header between Queens University of Charlotte softball (1-9) and Belmont Abbey (3-3) on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, as the Crusaders took both games by one run. The first game would fall to Belmont Abbey after the team scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to overtake a Royals lead. The second matchup came to an end as a walk-off homer from Jena Reisenauer gave the Crusaders a 4-3 score.
The Royals came out strong, finding seven runs in the third inning of game one, but Belmont Abbey would answer finding three runs at their next at bat. As play continued, Queens brought three more runners across the plate as the game headed into the bottom of the seventh with a 10-6 lead. With bases loaded, Belmont Abbey slow started to chip away at the Royals before a double into left field brought in two runners giving the Crusaders the game.
Belmont Abbey took the first scoring play in the second showing as an error brought a runner across the plate.
Taylor Cheek put the Royals on the board stealing her way to home plate and moving
Samantha Martinez to third in the process. Martinez would cross the plate just moments later. Trailing 3-2, Queens found their tying run in the top of the seventh from
Amanda Meade, but a walk-off home run took the game in the bottom of the inning.
Four Queens' hitters found a pair of hits in the first game with zero batters taking a strikeout. Queens found 12 hits to the Crusaders 13 in the game. Cheeks and
Hanna Hasker each hit a double for the Royals.
Catelyn Presley (1-3) who held the mound all game faced 38 batters giving up only three walks. Shannan Mas (1-0) would be credited with the win for Belmont Abbey facing four batters while giving up no hits, no runs, and only one walk.
Cheek found another double in game two, with
Robyn Levine and Meade adding a double to their performance. Queens had two stolen bases in the second match-up with Cheek and Martinez both moving on Cheek's scoring play. The Royals' pitching staff of
Whitley Baker and
Evie Scott (0-2) gave up only four runs and ten hits. Scott would take the loss for the game as Nikki Faust (1-1) took the win on the Crusader side with nine hits, three runs, no strikeouts, and no walks.
The team will head to Aiken, S.C., this Thursday to take on the University of South Carolina Aiken for a double-header beginning at 2 p.m.
