Box Score 2 Milledgeville, Ga. – Queens University of Charlotte softball team (1-3) was unable to move past Columbus State (2-2) on Sunday, February 01, 2015, in the second day of the Bobcat Blast as the team conceded both games to the Cougars. Columbus State took the first matchup with a 10-5 score before gabbing game two with an 8-2 victory.
The day started as stolen base put a runner in scoring position for Cougars as Kia Smith took advantage of a walk to base. She would be the first player to see home plate as teammate Katie White finally brought her in. Although the Royals defense left two stranded on base for Columbus, the team picked back up in the second inning taking three more runs. Finding their defensive stride again, Queens kept Columbus off the board until the bottom of the fourth where Kristen Carr hit a single out into left field to bring in two runner to make the game 7-0.
As Queens looked for a response on offense,
Taylor Rosenbalm drove a single into right field to see two of her teammates step across the plate for scores. However, the play would not be done as an error on the throw allowed
Samantha Martinez to put one more on the board for Queens. The Royals managed to load the bases but all three would be left stranded. The Cougars added two more runs to their score before the game found its way to close. However, not before Queens had back-to-back scoring plays in the bottom of the seventh.
Whitney Britt,
Kayla Hall,
Jasmyn Lindsay,
Lyndey McCurry, and Martinez each took runs in the first game to give the Royals five on the board equaling the team's five hits. The team would throw 18 defensive outs in contribution to the two strikeouts from
Evie Scott. However the Cougars took the category with 21 put outs and four strikeouts. Smith found home plate three times for Columbus State.
Only Rosenbalm and
Robyn Levine made their way home in the second game for the Royals. The team found 21 put outs equaling the Cougars side as Queens made plays from the field. Scott added one more strikeout to her day as
Catelyn Presley provided two strikeouts of her own.
Capitalizing on their earlier momentum, Columbus State took three run in the first inning off of four hits. An immediate fire back was delivered by Cheek who allowed Rosenbalm to cross the plate. The two teams would remain there until the Cougars broke through with a hit from Woods giving Lindsey DeFee room to score. Queens' defense held in the fifth but again Columbus State found hits in the sixth to bring in the last three runners.
Queens heads to their second tournament of the year on Saturday to face Mount Olive in the Armstrong Atlantic Tournament.
