Box Score ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team will compete in the South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Championship game for the second time in three years after knocking off No. 14 Carson-Newman College today on penalty kicks. Following a 3-3 tie, Queens would win the PK shootout 5-4 to improve to 10-7-1 on the year. The Eagles drop to 15-2-2.
Queens would get off to a hot start in today's match going up 3-0 in the opening 20 minutes of action before the Eagles found the back of the net. Midfielder
Marc-Kevin Schwenk scored the first goal of the day in the ninth picking up a deflection in the box before sending it into the goal. Midfielder
Celes Vilar then followed in the 11
th chipping the ball over Carson-Newman's keeper, Kavi Luchowa, from the top of the box. The third goal would come from defender
Austin Huddy who connected on a header off of a corner kick from Schwenk in the 20
th.
Carson-Newman's Sindre Welo would find the back of the net in the 24
th to prevent his team from heading into the break without a score.
In the second half, the Eagles tied the match up with goals in the 67
th and 78
th. Marius Staalby fired the Eagles' second goal into the net after receiving a pass from Tom Read, and James Ward headed the third in from inside the box off of a free kick from Read.
Both overtime periods that followed regulation went scoreless, sending today's contest to a penalty kick shootout. Queens' Brown got things started by making his PK, while Welo of the Eagles tied it 1-1. Carson-Newman goalkeeper Luke Greer then stopped
Caio Maciel's attempt, while Read's successful attempt gave the Eagles a 2-1 edge.
Ryan Ejezie and
Oemer Okyar of Queens converted their penalty kicks to keep Queens alive, while Staalby and Bruno Andrade put the Eagles on top 4-3. Rurik Pereira had a chance to send the Eagles to the title match, but his shot hit the crossbar keeping the Royals' chances alive.
Isaac Walker stepped up and drilled his penalty kick in round six, while Polyminos's Avgousti's effort was stopped by Queens goalkeeper
Sergio Lemus, sending Queens to the title match.
The Royals were outshot, 17-3, by the Eagles this afternoon, putting six shots on frame to Carson-Newman's nine.
Matt Current took the win in goal after totaling six saves. Luchowa of Carson-Newman finished the game with three saves.
Sunday's title game will take place at 1 p.m. at Manchester Meadows.
