Box Score Brevard, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team's five match run came to an end after the Royals traveled to Brevard on Friday, November 13, 2015. Queens, who now drops to 13-14 overall and 11-10 in the South Atlantic Conference, fell 3-1 against the Tornados as Brevard took the match 18-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-22. Brevard moves to a 12-15 overall record and advances to 9-12 in the SAC.
The Royals grabbed the first set against the Tornados, rallying to see a seven point game. An 8-0 run earlier in the set had the team leading 21-11 as Queens forced several offensive errors on the Brevard side. The run would also see kills from
Jessica Raines,
Alex Thompson and
Rebecca Cochran. However, the Tornados made up ground with two service aces from Aleksandra Vrvilo late in the set. Thompson made sure the win fell to the Royals as she found the floor for the set point.
Queens fell behind early in set two as the Royals called timeout after a 12-2 Brevard start. The timeout helped, as the team closed the gap with
Meredith Jones finding a kill for a 16-11 Brevard score. Queens would battle to get back in the game but ran out of time as Brevard capped the set at 25-19.
Despite a slight lead by the Tornados at 13-9, Queens found a push to tie the game after a 4-0 run (13-13). The team would briefly see the lead at 15-14 but Brevard launched into a 5-0 run to secure a 19-15 lead. The Royals never recovered as the match moved to the fourth set.
An 11 point run fell against the Royals as Brevard sat with a 12-5 lead in the fourth set. Fighting to stay in the match, Queens made up the ground to see the score shrink to a 22-19 Tornados lead with a service ace from
Kelsey McCormick. Jones capped the second push by the team as her kill made the score 24-22. However, an attacking error would give Brevard the match.
Raines led the team with 13 kills as Jones tallied right behind her with 12. Thompson provided defensive help finding seven blocks to help
Megan Mancini, who topped the team in digs with 22.
Sydney Kunz led the team in assists with 25.
Brevard was led by Fatima Gharachorloo who tallied 16 kills in the match. The Tornado tallied a total of 10 services aces, the second most tallied by an opponent this season as Erin Barr and Gharachorloo each took three. Barr also led the team in assists with 35.
The regular season ends tomorrow for the team as they play at Lenoir-Rhyne. The Royals are set to take the court at 2 p.m.
