Box Score Charlotte, N.C. – In a five set match against Newberry College, the Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team arose victorious after falling behind early in the match. Queens went 18-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 15-11 to take their win and move to a 7-11 overall record (5-8 South Atlantic Conference). Newberry would drop to 7-12 overall (5-7 SAC).
Rebecca Cochran led the team with 16 kills and 16 digs.
Taylor Henry took credit for four service aces to lead the team as
Alex Thompson tallied seven blocks and
Megan Mancini tallied 19 digs.
Annika Jones led the team in assists with 24.
Sydney Kunz would have 23 assists. The Royals would have a combined 11 service aces in the match.
Newberry was led by Madison Darby-McClure who found 13 kills in the match. Rachel Moran led in assists for the Wolves with 25 as Logan Hayward took the lead in digs with 20.
The first set fell to Newberry who capitalized on five unanswered points to claim the set.
The Royals were the owners of set two after seeing their way to a 24-20 score. Newberry did find three points to challenge the Queens' lead, but
Jessica Raines powered one over the net for the game point.
Although close through the set, Newberry took the third game with a four point gap creating a must win situation for Queens in set 4.
Queens led early in the fourth set as the Royals forced a Newberry timeout at 14-6 (Queens). Newberry would tighten the gap but would never tie the Royals as Raines and
Taylor Henry grab a block to force a deciding game.
The Royals started the last set with five unanswered points as Newberry called timeout. However, a service ace from Mancini burned another Wolves' timeout at a 10-4 Queens' lead. Errors from Queens soon put pressure on the game as Newberry fought to come within one point at 11-10. A timeout from the Queens' bench refocused the team, allowing the Royals to take the match.
The Royals next match will be at Lincoln Memorial next Friday, October 23. The team will take the court at 7 p.m.
