Queens Surpasses Francis Marion in Five Sets

Box Score Florence, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team topped Francis Marion in five sets on Tuesday, October 13, 2015. The Royals went 17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-27, 15-12 to pass the Peach Belt school and move to a 6-10 overall record while Francis Marion dropped to 11-8 overall record.  

Jessica Raines set a career high of 17 kills in the match against the Patriots. Megan Mancini also took a career high in digs and tied her career high in service aces. She would tally 32 digs and three service aces, leading the team in both stat lines.  For the Royals, this would be a season high of 13 service aces in one match. Sydney Kunz led the team in assists grabbing 26 while Annika Jones grabbed 21 assists.

Francis Marion would equal the Royals in overall kills with 56 as Alexzandra Reed tabbed 14 of them. She was followed by Georgia Garrison and Carlie Smith, who both grabbed 13 kills during the night. Carrie McGinnis led the team in assists with 26 and Shelbi Meek led the team in digs with 19.

Falling behind in the match, the Royals dropped in the first set 25-17. However, the team overcame the loss grabbing the next two sets to put them up in the match. Fighting their way through, the Royals overcame a 20-17 lead in the second set with Meredith Jones and Raines grabbing kills to give the team the set victory.

The Royals held the lead heading into the final points of set 3 as the team took a 23-17 score. Francis Marion pushed to a 23-22 Queens' score, but would be halted by a kill from Raines and a service ace from A. Jones.  

Set 4 saw a battle as the two teams sat close in score throughout most the game. Rebecca Cochran evened the score at 25-25, however kills by Smith and Caroline Boone sent the match into a deciding set.

A four point run by the Royals had Francis Marion calling timeout at 9-8 (Queens). Although the Patriots found a response, Queens worked their way into a 14-10 lead. Cochran gave the team their winning point off a set from Kunz to take the final game 15-12.

Queens will be back at home this weekend hosting Anderson on Friday, October 16. The match against the Trojans will begin at 7 p.m. at Curry Arena inside the Levine Center.
