Turnovers prove costly in Royals loss to #25 Carson-Newman

Box Score Jefferson City, Tenn. – Turnovers would be the difference in the Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball (4-9, 2-6 SAC) game against #25 ranked Carson-Newman (13-1, 7-1 SAC)  on Saturday, January 10, 2015. The Royals outscored the Eagles in the second half but were unable to overcome the mishaps of the first half falling 76-59.

Queens found pace in the second half of the game putting up 36 points to the Eagles 29, slowing making-up ground in the game. Lacey Singletary led the drive coming out of the half, taking 11 points for the team to mirror the 11 points provided by McKell Oliverio in the first half. Both players would end the day with 13 total points. Queens had their best performance of the year from the free-throw line making 18 of 22 shots for a .818 percentage.

The game would start off on equal footing with the Royals down 14-13 after nine minutes of play. However, miscues befell the Queens side leading to the first Carson-Newman run of 13-2. Oliverio found space in the paint to bring the team within 10 points but the Eagles took another 7-0 run making the game 34-17. Taking advantage of 20 Queens' turnovers Carson-Newman took the half 47-23.

Starting the second half refreshed, the Royals slowly started chipping away at the Carson-Newman margin limiting their turnovers to just seven for the rest of the day. The team found a run of their own with nine unanswered points with 10 minutes still left to play. Singletary's conversion of a three-point play brought the team within 12 points but it would be the closest they would come. Battling the clock, the Royals continued to fight but would ultimately run out of time in the 76-59 loss.

Abby Pettit's five rebounds led the team for the day. Singletary, Nikki Gleason, and Maggie Stewart garnered four additional rebounds apiece to help the team reach 32 total rebounds.

Jai Jai McLaughlin and Allison Hodge tied to lead the Eagles at 13 points. Hodge also had four steals for Carson-Newman combining with three steals from McLaughlin.

The Royals will host the second ranked team in the South Atlantic Conference on Wednesday, January 14 as Wingate University (9-6, 7-1 SAC) travels to Curry Arena.
