Box Score GAFFNEY, S.C. – Queens University of Charlotte, ranked 22
nd in the NSCAA Preaseason Poll, returned to the pitch for the 2014 season this evening at Limestone College, falling 1-0 to the Saints in the non-conference season opener.
Limestone would outshoot the Royals 8-0 in the second half of tonight's game to control things offensively after a very tight played first 45. Their goal would come from William Picoux in the 65
th minute who, after making a run up the center of the field, received a through ball from Vebjoern Olstad on the left side. He then slid the ball past Queens goalkeeper
Montrell Morgan from inside the box for the 1-0 advantage.
The Royals responded putting more pressure on Limestone's defense, but Queens was unable to find any openings for shots in the second half. Despite the eight shots, the Saints were only able to find the back of the net once thanks to Queens' back line making a number of great defensive plays on the ball.
In the first half of action, Queens' first and only shot on goal came at minute 23 from the boot of
Marc-Kevin Schwenk. Limestone's goalkeeper, Tom Godfrey, was able to turn the ball away keeping the game tied at 0-0. A header from Queens'
Ryan King just past the 27
th minute would also be blocked by Godfrey.
Around the 35
th minute of action, Limestone's defense stole the ball from the Royals, triggering a strong counter attack opportunity. It looked as if the Saints would put one in the net before the halftime break, but
Ryan Kawczynski raced up the field to deliver a perfectly timed tackle and clear the ball. Both teams headed into the break scoreless.
Morgan completed the 90 minutes of play with three saves, while Godfrey of Limestone totaled one save.
The Royals are back on the road on Sunday at Mount Olive University. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
