Royals sweep rival Crusaders

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. –The Queens softball team returned to the friendly confines of Park Road Park as they hosted former conference rivals Belmont Abbey in a doubleheader today. Queens was able to take both games by the score of 7-0 and 5-4, and gave them a much needed surge of energy for the final days of the season.
 
Game one
 
The Royals opened up the first inning on the right track when junior Whitney Britt ripped a line drive over the left center fence for a solo home run. Following an illegal pitch and a delayed steal allowing runs to score the Royals closed out the first with a 3-0 lead.
 
For the second time in the game the Royals used a delayed steal in the bottom of the second to add another run to the scoreboard. Following a Taylor Rosenbalm triple and score off a ground ball the Royals led by the score of 5-0 after three innings.
 
The Royals added more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Rosenbalm drove in Robyn Levine on line drive up the middle. Also scoring was Britt when she utilized another yet another delayed steal to take the score to 7-0.
 
Despite a threatening Belmont Abbey the Royals closed out the game for a 7-0 victory behind the strong pitching by senior Ashley Rollins. Dominating the circle she only gave up six hits, while striking out one. Britt and Rosenbalm led the Royals with two hits apiece.
 
Game two
 
Much like game one the Royals jumped to an early lead when Amanda Meade drove in Micaela Hayes to give Queens a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Queens added three more runs in the third that included an RBI single by Kaitlyn Cheek to take a 4-0 lead.
 
After an Emma Schultz triple the slugger Cheek stepped to the plate and successfully converted a suicide squeeze to give the Royals a 5-0 lead after five innings. The Crusaders threatened in the top of the sixth when they loaded the bases, and cut home team's the lead to 5-4.
 
But pitcher Lyndey McCurry stood strong and ended up with a complete game win where she only allowed nine hits. Cheek led the Royals from the plate where she went 3-3, and Schultz joined her with two hits.
 
Queens is now 17-19 on the season and hosts Newberry College on Wednesday.
