Game 2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte softball team picked up a pair of wins today, defeating Newberry College 5-0 and 2-1 in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader series. The Royals improve to 5-9 in the league and 19-19 on the year with the win, while the Wolves fall to 4-12 in the SAC and 18-24 on the season.

Pitcher Ashley Rollins played a huge role in helping the Royals pick up the 5-0 win in game one striking out 11 batters. Taylor Rosenbalm led Queens in hits with three, while collecting one RBI. Rollins led the team in RBIs with two.

The score would sit a 0-0 until the Royals came alive offensively in the fifth scoring all five of their runs in the game. Rosenbalm got Queens' scoring run going with a single that brought Samantha Martinez home. Martinez had singled on a bunt to first base before Whitney Britt also singled on a bunt helping her advance to second base. Martinez then reached third on an error by Newberry's pitcher.

Back-to-back walks with a runner on third helped Queens score their second and third runs before Rollins stepped up to hit a double bringing two more home.

The Wolves were only able to get two hits in the game.

Newberry had a better game offensively in game two led by Katie Capobianco who totaled three hits. Casey Nellums recorded two hits, while Mallory Gerndt tallied one hit and one RBI. Her RBI would come in the third inning on a single making the score 1-1.

The Royals scored their run early in the bottom of the first when Emma Schultz singled with a bunt helping Robyn Levine reach home plate who entered play as a pinch runner.

It appeared the game was heading into extra innings, but the Royals had other plans in the bottom of seventh. Pitcher Lyndey McCurry was first at bat, walking to first before advancing the second on a sac grounder by Martinez. Teale Moran then entered the game as a pinch runner for McCurry, and advanced to third as Britt grounded out to the Newberry's third baseman.

Levine was Queens next batter to step up to the plate hitting the ball to Newberry's third baseman once again. She then reached first on an error by the infielder as Moran raced home for the winning run.

McCurry improved to 8-6 on the season with the win in game two, while Rollins improved to 7-7 with her win in game one.

The Royals are on the road at Anderson University on Saturday. The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.
