Royals open conference play with win over Coker

Box Score HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Queens University of Charlotte (3-2) opened South Atlantic Conference play today at 1-0 with an 11-10 win over Coker College on the road. The Cobras drop to 2-3 on the year and 1-1 in SAC play with the loss.
 
The Royals went to work in the first quarter of action putting six points on the scoreboard in the opening period. After the Cobras started the game with a goal from Shane Wilson at 12:32, the Royals answered with two in a row within 12 seconds of each other. The two teams traded goals over the next few minutes before Queens ended with three straight to take a 6-3 lead into the second period.
 
Coker cut Queens' lead to two, 7-5, with a goal from John Bretton at 5:46 in the second, but once again Queens had two straight goals to answer with giving the Royals their largest lead of the game, 9-5. Two late goals from the Cobras would bring Coker within two of Queens before the half.
 
The third quarter was a quiet one offensively for both teams with the Cobras' Mike Martiello scoring the lone goal of the period at 11:42.
 
Queens picked up the tempo on the offensive end at the start of the fourth with a goal 54 seconds into action. Senior attacker Matthew Michael then put the Royals ahead 11-8 with a goal at 12:30. The Cobras tried to come back in the latter part of the period, but their final goal at 7:55 left them trailing Queens by one when the final horn sounded.
 
The Royals outshot Coker 39-22 and dominated the battle for ground balls, 30-12. Kenneth Stryker controlled the face-off easily winning 20-of-24.
 
Michael finished the game with seven points after recording a hat trick and four assists. Casey Hock added two goals and one assist for three points. Eric Dolan took the win in the cage after totaling five saves.
 
Bretton led the Cobras with three goals, while Shane Wilson added two goals. Tim Ryan took the loss in goal after collecting 17 saves.
 
The Royals are back at Dickson Field on Saturday against Dominican University of California at 7 p.m.
