Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte (7-19, 6-16 SAC) defeated Anderson University (15-13, 11-11 SAC) 68-57 this evening in Curry Arena ending the women's basketball season on a high note.
Leading the way for Queens was sophomore guard
Nikia Squire who scored 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Sophomore guard
Micha Cox added 18 points. Senior forward
Shonice Pettaway scored 17 points giving her a career total of 1,616 points, which ranks third on Queens' all-time scoring list. Pettaway also pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds tonight giving her a career total of 810, which also ranks third on Queens' all-time list. Squire totaled eight rebounds.
The Royals started tonight's game with a 13-0 run. The Trojans saw their first points from Alexis Dillard who knocked down a pair of free-throws at 15:10. Queens didn't allow Anderson to score a field goal until 14:03, and at that point the Royals held an 11-point lead, 15-4. A jumper from Cox would put the Royals ahead by 13 once more before the Trojans put together a 13-0 run to knot the game at 17-17 with 7:42 left in the half. Six straight points from the Royals quickly put the home team back on top and they would carry a 32-28 lead into the break.
The Trojans were able to tie the game up again 3:57 into the second half, but once again the Royals had an answer not allowing the Trojans to take over the lead. By 9:14 Queens had built their lead back out to 13.
With 40 seconds to play, Anderson had cut the Royals' lead down to five, but Squire and Pettaway took care of business at the foul line to secure the victory for Queens.
The Royals shot 42.6 percent from the floor, while holding the Trojans to just 27.1 percent shooting. Queens also out-rebounded Anderson, 47-43. The Royals totaled eight blocks today with
Lacey Singletary notching six.
Madison Floyd led Anderson with 12 points.
Alexys Taylor and Pettaway were recognized for their careers as Royals during halftime of the men's game.
The Royals season ends with tonight's game as the South Atlantic Conference Tournament only advances the league's top-eight.
