Late run comes up short for Royals at Mars Hill

Box Score MARS HILL, N.C. – Despite senior forward Shonice Pettaway scoring 35 points, the Royals lost 67-64 at Mars Hill University this afternoon in women's basketball action. The loss brings Queens University of Charlotte's South Atlantic Conference record to 4-13, while their overall record drops to 5-16. The Lions improve to 5-12 in the SAC and 6-15 on the season.
 
After falling behind by as much as 16 points early in the second half, the Royals put together a string of runs to get in position to win late in the game. Halfway through the period Queens had cut the Lions' lead to six, but Mars Hill was able to find a couple of baskets to extend their lead back out to 11 with 8:14 to play.
 
A 9-2 run would bring the Royals to within four, 53-49, at 5:56, but Mars Hill had an answer that held off Queens for a short period of time. The Royals would later find themselves down by just one point following a jumper from Pettaway with 1:15 on the clock. Unfortunately the Lions immediately scored a basket on the other end to go ahead by three and neither team scored again in the remaining seconds of regulation.
 
The Royals began today's game in a shooting funk as the Lions created a 10-point lead with 10:34 to play. Queens would trail Mars Hill 33-22 at the halftime break.
 
Queens edged Mars Hill under the glass, 42-41, in today's game but lost the battle for points in the paint, 36-30.
 
Pettaway connected on 13-of-26 attempts to score her 35 points. She also grabbed 15 rebounds and totaled three blocks. Abby Pettit finished the game with 10 points and four assists, while Lacey Singletary recorded seven points, eight rebounds, and six blocks.
 
Ansley Ricker led the Lions with 14 points, while Paige Chavis and Cadence Wilmoth each scored 13 points. Kelsey Espinosa added 11 point and nine rebounds.
 
Queens is back in action in Curry Arena on Monday against Wingate University at 6 p.m.
