Pettaway got going early scoring eight points in the opening 6:18 to help Queens take a 12-2 lead, and at 10:03 the forward hit a jumper to give the Royals their largest lead of the half, 20-4.
The Pioneers soon responded with an 11-2 spurt to cut Queens' lead to seven, 22-15, with 4:05 left in the half, but the Royals were able to counter with a Singletary layup and a Pettaway three-pointer in the closing minutes of the half to take a 27-17 lead at the break.
Queens began the second half much like they began the game on the offensive end. They would find themselves holding a 48-31 lead following a three-pointer from
Erin Brundage at 10:40. The 17-point lead was their largest of the game.
With 4:55 on the clock Queens held a 13-point lead and it seemed they had the game in the win column, but the Pioneers, having other plans, put together a comeback that cut Queens' lead to one, 65-64, with 33 seconds on the clock. Tusculum then gambled with a foul sending the Royals to the line with the chance to extend their lead to four making it a two-possession game. Unfortunately, both free-throws were missed and Nequoiah Anderson of the Pioneers scored a layup with nine seconds on the clock to give her team the win.
Anderson led Tusculum with 21 points in today's game, while Shynese Whitener and Blakeley Burleson added 14 point apiece.
The Royals are on the road on Wednesday, February 5 at Catawba College.
