Box Score 2 MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Queens University of Charlotte softball team began its season today in the Bobcat Blast Tournament taking on Georgia Southwestern State University. After falling 5-3 to the Canes in game one, the Royals won game two 7-3.
Junior
Whitney Britt led the Royals in game one with three hits and two RBIs. She totaled three hits in game two to lead Queens in that game as well. Additionally, Britt scored two runs for Queens in their win. Freshman
Ashton Whitaker also played well in the win recording two hits and three RBIs. Freshman
Micaela Hayes also notched two hits on the day.
Sophomore
Lyndey McCurry pitched all seven innings for Queens in game one facing 29 batters and striking out seven, while senior
Ashley Rollins pitched all seven innings in game two striking out four batters.
In the first game of the day the Canes were able to get on the board in the first after Nellie Moore hit a homerun to bring two runners home. Georgia Southwestern would score again in the third on a double from Rachel McElroy. They would lead 5-0 by the end of the fifth inning.
The Royals would find their rhythm in the bottom of the seventh when
Miranda Cummings was able to give
Shelby O'Brien the opportunity to score a run with a sac fly. Britt would step up to the plate later to hit a home run and bring
Kaitlyn Bodine in from first after she singled before Cummings hit. Queens' next batter would ground out to Georgia Southwestern's short stop ending the game with the 5-3 score.
The Canes got on the board first in the second game of the day as well in the bottom of the first to lead 1-0.
The Royals would tie things up in the fourth when
Amanda Meade scored a run on a single up the middle from Whitaker. Georgia Southwestern had an answer for Queens in the bottom of the fourth scoring on a triple from Mason Moreland that brought McElroy across home plate. Then following a scoreless fifth inning from Queens, the Canes would find another run to go ahead 3-1 heading into the top of the sixth.
The Royals saw an opening in the top of the sixth scoring an unearned run on an error by the Canes. Queens then held Georgia Southwestern scoreless in the bottom of the sixth.
The Royals then came alive in the seventh to score five runs and take the lead. After
Kaitlyn Cheek walked,
Samantha Martinez would enter the game to pinch run for her.
Taylor Rosenbalm then stepped up to the plate to hit a double up the center and bring Martinez in for the score to equalize the game at 3-3. Rosenbalm would then score the fourth run for Queens after getting batted in by Britt who hit a double to center field.
Later, Whitaker hit a double to bring two runners in and
Emily Poulton collected an RBI after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the game a score of 7-3 in Queens' favor. The Royals would hold strong in the bottom of the seventh to take the win.
Queens will face Georgia College & State University tomorrow in a doubleheader at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
