Box Score Charlotte, N.C. –  Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball (2-8, 0-5) lit up the floor against the Panthers from Claflin University (6-2, 0-0 SIAC) on Saturday, December 20, 2014, as
McKell Oliverio beat the clock in a last second basket to claim the game 66-64. Â
Maggie Stewart claimed a career high 20 rebounds in the game which also took the season high for the team.
Oliverio tied her career high of eight made field goals, tallying a total of 18 points for the game and shooting .615 from the floor.
Nikki Gleason found 16 points in the game setting a new career high as she assisted the Royals in their win over the 8th South Regionally ranked Panthers. The 66 points from the Queens offense was the highest for the season aiding another best of 41 rebounds trumping the teams previous high of 38 rebounds against Livingstone.
Lead by Shaniece Brown who took 13 points in the game, the Panther accumulated 64 points in a game that saw a total of seven tying points and 17 lead changes. Uniqua Mitchell and La'Nice Kibler added another 22 points to the board with Mitchell knocking down 12 points and Kibler another 11 points.
The game started with two quick fouls on Queens putting Claflin in an early lead. However, the first half would be highly contested as the two teams saw nine lead changes and two tying points inside the first 20 minutes. The first identical score would arise at 8-8 with Queens fighting to overcome a 7-2 start from the Panthers. The tying run was capped with
Sheridan Pressley making one from the floor to give Queens an 11-8 lead. The game soon pushed towards the Panthers' side as Kibler and Briana Chisolm aided in a 10-0 run for Claflin. As time ticked down, the Royals found rhythm to take a 30-29 lead heading into the break.
Breaking from half,
Abby Pettit immediately hit a three-pointer for the Royals to keep momentum alive but the battle would continue as five more tying points and eight changes in the lead found their way to the board. Davis found the first tie of the second half off a layup to bring the game to 36-36. From there both teams found the basket keeping the game within one possession until the 8:15 mark with the Royals finding some room with a 48-44 score. The Panthers would not be denied that easily eventually finding the tie at 56-56 with under three minutes to play.
Abby Pettit battling traffic grabbed one off the rim before converting the three-point play to give Queens a 59-56 lead with just 2:05 to play. With just 13 seconds on the clock, Victoria Thompson found the equalizer for Claflin to force a 59-59 score. Queens in a sprint down the court found Oliverio open on the right corner as she hit a long two-pointer as time expired giving the game to the Royals. Â
Queens will head to Mars Hill after the break to take on the Lions on January 3.
