Box Score Charlotte, NC – Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (0-3, 0-1 SAC) opened up conference play against the #6 Southeast regionally ranked Lenoir-Rhyne (1-2, 1-0 SAC) falling in the game 55-46. The Royals shot 76.9% from the line making 10 of 13 free-throws in the game.
Abby Pettit led the night with 14 points for the Royals.
Lacey Singletary followed with 12 points to partner with five assists, two blocks, and a steal. Queens rallied in the second half to outscore the Bears 33-29, however due to a first half deficit of 26-13 the game would fall Lenoir-Rhyne's way.
Lenoir-Rhyne's Jazmine Charles found 19 points for the night. She also contributed three assists and two steals in the matchup. Jenni Gust followed behind her teammate taking 16 points.
Lenoir-Rhyne took the first basket battling through a strong Queens' defense that held them off the board until 17:22. However, the Bears soon broke out into a 7-0 lead before
Karleasha Thompson gave the Royals their first points sinking two free-throws seven minutes into the game (7-2). The Royals found their first basket from the floor with 11:29 remaining in the first half as
Sheridan Pressley dribble past Bear defenders for a pass to
Maggie Stewart who sunk the layup beating out the shot clock (11-4). Unable to capitalize, Lenoir-Rhyne took a 12-0 run before a foul allowed Singletary to give the Royals two more points (23-6).
Nikki Gleason gave the Royals on last basket before converting it into a three-point play as the floor broke for half with the Bears holding a 26-13 lead.
After a slow first half, Queens came out on fire not allowing the Bears to score a basket from the floor until 12:37 remaining the game. All the while, the Royals battle back brining the game to a 27-23 Bears' lead. Queens would continue to provide pressure with Pressley making a three pointer and Pettit finding a layup to bring the Royals within three points (33-30). Pressley kept the team within three with a sound shot for two points coming 6:13 left to play (40-37). The Bears, however, found a 7-0 run to put them up by 10 with less than three minutes to play. Lenoir-Rhyne held their lead until the end to take the game 55-46.
The Royals host Lincoln Memorial on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Curry Arena in the Levine Center.
