Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Queens University of Charlotte (3-7) defeated Newberry College (4-5-1), 2-1, this afternoon at Dickson Field improving their South Atlantic Conference to 3-2 on the season. The win also moves the Royals up to third in conference standings, tied with Anderson, Lenoir-Rhyne and Mars Hill. The Wolves now sit at 2-2-1 in league play.
Sophomore midfielder
Corey Brown found the back of the net for the first time in his collegiate career today, scoring the game-winner in the 66
th minute. Brown was able to find a shot when the ball was deflected and bounced to his feet following a corner kick.
In the first half, the Wolves grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 20
th minute on an unassisted goal from Sterling Wendt. The freshman midfielder was able to get a shot off after a rebound deflected off of a Queens defender in his direction. Wendt sent the ball into the right corner of the net for the lead.
The Royals took advantage of their opportunity to match Newberry's goal in the 30
th minute when
Marc-Kevin Schwenk sent a ball to
Ryan Ejezie racing up the right side of the field. Ejezie then crossed the ball to
Philip Makhlouf for the score. Makhlouf's shot zipped into the back left corner of the net, knotting things up at 1-1. Schwenk recorded his seventh of the season on the play as he leads the league in the category.
Montrell Morgan of Queens finished the game with five saves. He currently ranks second in the conference with 48 on the season. Nick Lucido of Newberry, who leads the SAC in saves with 50, totaled three saves.
The Royals are back at Dickson Field on October 8 against Catawba College at 7:30 p.m.
