Queens volleyball comes up shy at Brevard

Box Score Charlotte, NC - Queens University of Charlotte (5-14, 2-9 SAC) would take a narrow road loss to Brevard College (10-8, 4-7 SAC) on Saturday, October 11, 2014, in a match that saw 22 tying scores and nine lead changes. The Royals would provide pressure in Set 2 and Set 3 but would be unable to come up with the win falling 25-18, 27-25, 25-23 to the Tornados.

Rebecca Cochran would contribute ten kills to the Royals fight with a .286 hitting percentage. She would also add three aces and a block to the match. Meredith Jones had ten kills and two blocks for Queens helping contribute to the overall 38 kills from the Queens side. Megan Mancini would have a lightning performance at serving with three aces rounding out her weekend with five total, as two services aces came against Lenoir-Rhyne the night prior.  Mancini would lead the Royals in digs with 12 as Sydney Kunz would lead in assists with 30.

Brevard's night would be capped with 40 overall kills as Hannah Elmore would take ten and Fatima Gharachorloo nine for the Tornados. In addition to her attacking presence, Gharachorloo would grab nine digs for the match coming second to teammate Aleksandra Vrvilo with 15 digs. Erin Barr would take hold of 30 of the 38 assists for the Tornados' side.

Queens would start the match with a 3-1 lead as Cochran and Jones each took early kills for the Royals. Momentum would shift as the Royals would have five miscued offensive plays that forced a timeout out from the Queens' bench at 7-3. Elizabeth Bialkowski would bring Queens within four as the she hammered a pass from Kunz onto the Tornados' court (10-6). Brevard would find a response in Elmore who would rattle off three kills eventually backing Queens into a 15-8 timeout. Thompson and Cochran would provide stride for the Royals with Thompson taking two kills and Cochran firing off two unstoppable serves  as the Royals battled back within two (15-13). It would, however, be a Brevard set as they took three kills and a block in their run to close out the Royals 25-18.

In a set that saw 13 tying points, the Royals came out swing finding 13 kills and three aces for the set. Brevard would open the set building off their previous performance taking a 5-1 lead. However, a couple mistimed attacks would tie the match at 5-5 and cause the Tornados to call timeout. Jones and Bialkowski each brought pressure forcing Brevard to answer with three tying points heading into a 9-9 match score. Queens would eventually find room to make a 3-0 run as Bialkowski would drive in a point for the Royals as Mancini followed with an ace. However, Brevard find Elmore and push back for a tied 14-14 set. Queens would have two aces as the set again came to a tie at 16-16 and 18-18. The two teams would continue to exchange points with Brevard eventually find a 24-22 window. The set was not over for the Royals as Cochran ran three kills off in a row taking the 25-24 lead. Queens would be unable to hold on as Brevard battled back and capped the set 27-25.

It would again be a closely fought battle for both squads as the third set went underway. Schoenrock and Kunz each took early kills as the teams met at a 5-5 set score. The Royals would have the upper hand eventually taking a two point lead at 8-6. Mancini would split a pair of Schoenrock kills in a run that brought the Royals into a 12-9 lead but three back-to-back errors would turn the tables giving the Tornados the lead (14-12). The Tornados would maintain the lead for the remainder of the match with Queens holding close as Jones and Schoenrock each seized kills (23-20). With a narrow victory, the Tornados would again nudge the Royals out with a 25-23 cap for the match.


Queens will play again on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 against nationally ranked #9 Wingate.
