Second half push not enough as Royals fall to Wingate

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Royals (5-8) traveled to take on Wingate University (10-3), falling 66-48 to the Bulldogs this evening in Cuddy Arena. Queens University of Charlotte now sits at 4-5 in the South Atlantic Conference, while Wingate improves to 6-3 in the league.
 
Sophomore Nikia Squire scored 21 points all in the second half of the game to lead Queens, while senior forward Shonice Pettaway added 20 points. Squire shot 6-11 from the floor and was a perfect 6-6 at the foul line, while Pettaway shot 8-19 from the floor.
 
The Royals shot just 20 percent in the first half of play as the Bulldogs poured in 41 points shooting 45 percent from the floor. At the break, Queens found themselves in a 28-point deficit.
 
Queens' offense was able to pick up in the second half where the Royals heated up from behind the three-point line connecting on 6-10 attempts. Queens would outscore the Bulldogs 35-25 in the half, but Wingate's first half performance proved to be too much for Queens to overcome.
 
The Royals completed today's game shooting a 41.2 percent three-point field goal percentage, while the Bulldogs just shot 25 percent from behind the arc.
 
Janitsha Williams led Wingate with 15 points, while Kayla Harris scored 14 points. Morgan McGee added 13 points.
 
Queens is back at home at Curry Arena against Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
