Queens dominates Belmont Abbey on Senior Day

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte (7-8) picked up a 16-9 win over Belmont Abbey College (5-7) this afternoon on Senior Day at Dickson Field. The Royals improve to 4-1 in the league, while the Crusaders drop to 2-2.
 
Jena Ready (Charlotte, N.C., Charlotte Catholic) and Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va., Bishop Ireton) each notched four points to lead Queens' offense. Ready notched four goals, while Barnwell recorded two goals, two assists, and seven draw controls. Brittany Larranaga (Orlando, Fla., Bishop Moore Catholic) also contributed, recording a hat trick, and Maggie Masters (Annapolis, Md., Annapolis) scored two goals and dished out one assist. Melissa Boulbol (Wellington, Fla., Palm Beach Central) also recorded three points with one goal and two assists. Queens' defense totaled 15 caused turnovers.
 
The Royals played an aggressive first half outshooting the Crusaders 23-10 to jump out to a 4-1 lead with 18:07 on the clock following a 3-0 run. Belmont Abbey would answer with a run of their own late in the half to tie the game up; forcing Queens head coach Meghan Dennehy to call a timeout. Queens' defense responded out of the break, increasing their pressure on the Crusaders and holding Belmont Abbey scoreless for the remainder of the half as Maggie Masters and Brittany Larranaga each found the back of the net in the final three minutes to give Queens a 6-4 lead at the half.
 
Queens carried their momentum into the second half scoring five straight goals in the opening eight minutes of action. With Queens holding an 11-4 lead, the Crusaders found the back of the net twice closing the gap to five, 11-6. Masters and Ready quickly responded putting the Royals back up seven with 14 minutes left in regulation. Queens would go on to score three more goals before the final horn sounded.
 
The Royals outshot Belmont Abbey 43-24 and dominated the battle for draw controls, 21-6. Danielle Horoschak (Jarrettsville, Md., North Harford) took the win in the goal with nine saves.
 
Megan Patton led the Crusaders with five points after notching four goals and one assist. Katy Connery added two goals. Danielle Ruffalo took the loss in the cage after getting 12 stops.

Caitlin Miller (Bethany Beach, Del., Worcester Prep)Cara Baldini (Silver Spring, Md., Georgetown Visitation Prep)  Caitlin Flanagan (West Islip, N.Y., West Islip) and Allie Rhodes (Davidsonville, Md., South River) along with Barnwell and Boulbol were recognized at the half for their careers at Queens.
 
The Royals will wrap up their regular season on the road beginning with a game at Converse College on April 10.
