Ready nets seven to lead Queens past Lees-McRae

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sophomore attacker Jena Ready (Charlotte, N.C., Charlotte Catholic) led Queens University of Charlotte (6-8) to an 18-8 win over Lees-McRae College (3-5) this evening at the Queens Sports Complex. The win advances Queens' league record to 3-1, while the Bobcats drop to 0-3 in Conference Carolinas.
 
Ready also notched two assists to total nine points and her seven goals tied Queens' record for the most goals scored in a single game. Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va., Bishop Ireton) notched four goals, while Brittany Larranaga (Orlando, Fla., Bishop Moore Catholic) tallied two goals, five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Arika Zimmerman (Fulton, Md., Reservoir) and Allie Rhodes (Davidsonville, Md., South River) led the Royals in caused turnovers with five apiece. Zimmerman also notched six ground balls and six draw controls.
 
Ready put the first point on the board at 29:11 in the first on a feed from Zimmerman, and the Royals soon found themselves with a 4-0 lead. At 19:52, Jessica MacConnell would score the Bobcats' first goal on a free-position-shot. They would cut Queens' lead to three, 5-2, around the midway point of the half, but the Royals responded with a 3-0 push, expanding their lead to six, 8-2, with 10:37 to play. The Bobcats then outscored Queens 3-2 in the final 10 minutes of the period, cutting the Royals' lead to five, 10-5, at the break.
 
MacConnell of Lees-McRae would score the first goal of the second half before Ready heated up scoring three straight goals to shift the momentum back to Queens' side. Barnwell and Nicole Forgione (Davidson, N.C., Northern Guilford) would then follow with goals of their own to cap Queens' 5-0 run.
 
Holding a 15-7 lead with 20 minutes of action left, the Royals turned up their defensive pressure to hold off the Bobcats and coast to a home victory.
 
Queens outshot Lees-McRae 48-17 and won the battle for draw controls 19-9. The Royals also scooped up 42 ground balls to the Bobcats' 19.
 
Olivia Gudewich led Lees-McRae with five points on two goals and three assists, while MacConnell notched a hat trick.
 
The Royals are back at home on Saturday at noon against Belmont Abbey College for Senior Day.
