Softball sweeps the Flying Fleet

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. – With less than two weeks left before the conference tournament the Royals softball team hosted rival Erskine at Park Road Park today. Jockeying for position for the tournament the Royals battled the Flying Fleet throughout the day and managed to sweep the visiting team.

Game one

In the first matchup of the doubleheader the story of the game was pitching with Ashley Rollins (Fairfax, Va., Fairfax) of Queens facing off against one of the top pitchers in Conference Carolinas, Kelsey Spurrier,

The Royals were held in check until the fourth inning, but with one swing of the bat designated player Noemi Rodriguez (Miami, Fla., G. Holmes Braddock Senior ) was able to change the scoreboard. Stepping to the plate the slugger pounded an inside pitch over the left field fence to give Queens a 1-0 lead.

Following a leadoff triple by Whitney Britt (Gibson, N.C., Scotland)  it was Emma Schultz (Silver Spring, Md., Paint Branch) who provided the next run when she laid down a perfect bunt to complete a suicide squeeze. Still not satisfied with a 2-0 lead the Royals struck again in the fifth when Kaitlyn Cheek (Richmond, Va., JR Tucker ) blasted a two run home run over centerfield to double the lead to 4-0.

That was all the Royals needed in offense as Rollins went the whole game, and only gave up four hits to earn a 4-0 win.

Game two

In game two the Royals offense took off from the first inning when Robyn Levine (Raleigh, N.C., Enloe) knocked in Britt a single up the middle. Erskine countered and took a 2-1 lead, but the Royals responded with a Megan Lathbury (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central) RBI single up the middle to even the score 2-2.

Once again the resilient Flying Fleet took the lead at 5-3, but the Royals battled right back following another RBI single by the clutch Levine in the fifth inning. Tied in the seventh it was Britt who scored on an error to give the Royals a 6-5 victory.

Following today the Royals are 18-19  overall and 9-7 in conference. They host Mount Olive this Saturday in a pink game to raise breast cancer awareness.
