Royals offense propels sweep of Falcons

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Following a rain-soaked week the Royals softball team finally returned to the diamond at Park Road Park to host conference rivals Pfeiffer. From the first pitch the Royals appeared to be in control and ended the day with two significant conference wins.

Game one

The Royals opened their first game with little fanfare, but in the third inning their bats came alive with four runs. Following a Whitney Britt (Gibson, N.C., Scotland) RBI single, it was the shortstop Emma Schultz (Silver Spring, Md., Paint Branch) who powered in three more runs with a towering home run to give the Royals a 4-1 lead.

The Falcons tied the game in the fourth, but the Royals were able to once again to score two more in the fifth, and finished the game with a 6-4 victory. Leading the offense was Kaitlyn Bodine (Scottsville, Va., Monticello) who had three hits, and was joined by Britt and Schultz with two apiece.

Bodine also picked up the win from the circle after she came in the game to relieve Lyndey McCurry (Commerce, Ga., Hebron Christian) in the fifth inning. Together the freshman pair limited the Falcons to seven hits in the game.

Game two

In game two the Royals did not just pick up where they left off, they intensified their effort. In just five innings the Royals had seven hits, and finished with a 12-2 victory.

In the first inning Queens jumped to an early lead largely aided by the first career home run by Emily Poulton (Temecula, Calif., Great Oak).  Also joining her with a home run was Britt in the second inning who ended the game as one of four Royals who went three for three. Rounding out the foursome was Megan Lathbury (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central)Noemi Rodriguez (Miami, Fla., G. Holmes Braddock Senior ), and Schultz.

Ashley Rollins (Fairfax, Va., Fairfax) went the entire game in the circle where she only gave up one earned run on five hits.

The Royals are now 13-16 on the season, and travel to Limestone next Wednesday.
