Women’s lacrosse loses 21-15 at Belmont Abbey

Box Score BELMONT, N.C. – After leading 9-7 at the break, the Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team lost 21-15 to Belmont Abbey College due to a tough second half. The Royals drop to 4-4 on the season, while the Crusaders improve to 4-3.
 
The Royals would fall behind 1-0 in the opening minute of action before notching back-to-back scores to take a 2-1 lead at 25:12. The Crusaders then answered with two goals in a row to regain the lead at 21:19. Arika Zimmerman (Fulton, Md., Reservoir) gave the lead back to the Royals with 12:27 to play on an unassisted goal. They would then outscore the Crusaders 4-3 in the remainder of the half to take a 9-7 lead at the break.
 
Queens started the second half much like they ended the first, notching two in a row to extend their lead to four, 11-7. However, the Royals would go cold on the offensive end as the Crusaders scored 10 goals in a row, taking a 16-11 lead with 13:15 left in regulation. Barnwell's goal at 12:45 would bring life back to the Royals' attack, but Belmont Abbey answered with five straight, widening the gap to eight, 20-12. The Royals would score three more in the final four minutes of action.
 
Queens outshot Belmont Abbey 36-31, and won the battle for draw controls, 26-12.
 
Nicole Forgione (Davidson, N.C., Northern Guilford)Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va., Bishop Ireton) and Zimmerman each notched four points for Queens in today's game. Barnwell also led the Royals with nine draw controls.
 
Katy Connery led the Crusaders with seven goals. Lindsay Connolly added six points with three goals and three assists.
 
The Royals are on the road for their next two games in Severna Park, Md.
