Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte used a 10-0 start to fuel them past the Indians of Catawba College this evening in men's lacrosse action. The Royals won 17-8, improving their record to 3-3 on the season. Catawba drops to 2-5 after picking up its fifth loss in a row.
Justin Kestler (Pasadena, Md., Chesapeake) would get the Royals going with an unassisted goal at 13:08. Four more unassisted goals would follow for Queens before the first quarter ended, giving the Royals a 5-0 lead heading into the second.
Garrett Chan (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry Fox Secondary School) would score two goals in the first.
Chan found the back of the net early in the second, giving him a hat trick. He would finish the game with four goals to lead Queens. Just like in the first period, four goals would follow for the Royals giving the home team a 10-0 advantage. The Indians would net their first goal of the game with 9:41 on the clock. The goal from Trevor Sieracki would shift the momentum to Catawba as they closed the half with three more to trail Queens six, 10-4, at the break.
Queens would fire two in the net back-to-back to go up 12-4 with 12:20 to play in the third, but Catawba would respond scoring three goals in the remainder of the quarter compared the Queens' one.
With the game sitting at 13-7 in Queens' favor heading into the fourth, both offenses went dry due in large part to the goal keepers on each end making key saves. Tom Cullop of Catawba would score first in the period at 8:34, notching his third of the game, and bringing the Indians to within five, 13-8. However, Queens stayed poised finding four more goals before the final horn to secure their victory at Dickson Field.
The Royals outshot Catawba 40-34, and won 17-of-29 face-offs. Queens also won the ground ball battle, 35-23.
Casey Hock (Danville, Calif., Monte Vista) joined Chan with four goals on the night. Hock also notched an assist, giving him five points to lead the Royals.
Tyler Van Horn (Cary, N.C., Cardinal Gibbons) and Kestler each added two goals, while
Nick Wilkinson (Huntingtown, Md., The Calverton School) posted three points and
Evan Farkas (Havre de Grace, Md., C. Milton Wright) posted two.
Kevin Lining (Rochester Hills, Mich., Troy Athens) won 16-of-26 face-offs and totaled seven ground balls.
Bobby Berman (North Andover, Mass., North Andover) and
Patrick Murphy (Easton, Pa., Easton Area) each notched three caused turnovers. Murphy also totaled five ground balls.
Eric Dolan (Hopkinton, Mass., St. Mark's School) picked up the win in the cage after collecting 16 saves.
Collup led the Indians with a hat trick, while Steven Ridolfo and John Scheich tallied two goals apiece.
Queens is on the road at Belmont Abbey Saturday at 1 p.m.
