Royals come up short against No. 1 Mercyhurst

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte hosted No. 1 Mercyhurst University this Sunday afternoon, falling 13-7 to the Lakers on Dickson Field at the Queens Sports Complex. The Royals drop to 1-2 on the year, while the Lakers begin their season at 1-0.
 
Queens' Justin Kestler (Pasadena, Md., Chesapeake) would get the Royals on the board first with a score at 10:37 in the first. The Lakers would respond to tie the game at 5:58 with a goal from Trevor Vargo. Mercyhurst's Jake McAndrew would follow with one 41 seconds later to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead that would hold until the end of the first quarter.
 
Mercyhurst would take control in the second quarter, outscoring Queens 7-2 to take a 9-3 lead at the half.
 
Both teams cooled off offensively in the third with the Lakers scoring the lone goal at 11:17. They would hold a 10-3 lead heading into the final period.
 
Queens' Garrett Chan (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry Fox Secondary School) got the Royals going in the fourth with back-to-back goals, closing the gap to six, 11-5, with 9:20 to play. Chan then assisted on a goal from Cory Kloepfer (Gilford,Ontario, Canada, Bradford DIstrict) that brought the Royals to within five, 11-6, of the Lakers. However, Mercyhurst would close the game outscoring the Royals 2-1 in the closing minutes to secure their victory.
 
The Royals were outshot 39-31 by the Lakers and lost the battle for ground balls 26-19.
 
Chan finished the game with four points on three goals and one assist to lead the Royals. Dillon Draper (Huntingtown, Md., The Calverton School) and Patrick Murphy (Easton, Pa., Easton Area) each finished with two caused turnovers and three ground balls on the defensive end. Nick Simonetti (Dublin, Ohio, Dublin Jerome) and Eric Dolan (Hopkinton, Mass., St. Mark's School) split time in the net to collect a combined total of 13 saves.
 
Brian Scheetz of Mercyhurst led all on the field today with seven points after recording a hat trick and four assists. Brady Heseltine and McAndrew also recorded hat tricks, while Zac Reid notched three points on two goals and one assists. Face-off specialist Mitch McAvoy completed the day winning 12-of-18 face-offs and tallying six ground balls.
 
The Royals are back at home on Wednesday against Coker at 7:30 p.m.
