Jena Ready (Charlotte, N.C., Charlotte Catholic) recorded five goals and two assists this evening to lead the Royals past Lenoir-Rhyne University on the road. Queens University of Charlotte defeated the Bears, 21-9, improving to 2-1 on the season. The Bears drop to 1-1 on the year.
Nicole Forgione (Davidson, N.C., Northern Guilford) and
Maggie Masters (Annapolis, Md., Annapolis) put the Royals ahead, 4-0, in the first 10 minutes of play notching two goals apiece. The Bears would break up Queens' run with a pair of scores themselves before the Royals put three more in the net to make the score 7-2 at 7:10. Lenoir-Rhyne would close the half with the hot hand, scoring four unanswered goals as the Royals headed into the break with a narrow 7-6 lead.
The second half was all Queens as several players got hot. Ready would net all five of her goals in the final 30, while
Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va., Bishop Ireton) recorded a hat trick. The Royals outscored the Bears 14-3 in final period to return home with the victory.
The Royals outshot Lenoir-Rhyne, 36-25, and edged the Bears in draw controls, 16-15.
Brittany Larranaga (Orlando, Fla., Bishop Moore Catholic), Forgione and Masters joined Barnwell recording hat tricks in the win, while
Arika Zimmerman (Fulton, Md., Reservoir) notched two goals. Masters also tallied two assists to total five points behind Ready.
Hayley Wilson (Chapel Hill, N.C., Chapel Hill) led the Royals with seven ground balls, and Zimmerman led in draw controls with six.
Danielle Horoschak (Jarrettsville, Md., North Harford) took the win in goal after collecting nine saves.
Mary Minick led the Bears with four points on three goals and one assist. Sarah Minick and Lauren Donovan each added three points.
The Royals will host Lees-McRae College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
