Pettaway scores 26 in win over Brevard

Box Score BREVARD, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team improved their South Atlantic Conference record to 2-3 today with a 67-66 win over Brevard College. The win gives the Royals a season record of 3-5. The Tornados drop to 2-5 on the year and 1-4 in the SAC with the loss.

Senior forward Shonice Pettaway led the way for Queens scoring a game-high 26 points. She also totaled nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Sophomore forward Tia Hudgins added 13 points, while sophomore guard Micha Cox scored 11 points.

The Royals had their best performance of the season shooting from the floor posting a 48 percent field goal percentage today. In the opening half they shot 54 percent from the floor to head into the break with a 40-36 lead.

After falling being 8-0 at the start of play, Queens quickly regrouped to take a 9-8 lead on a layup from Lacey Singletary at 14:18. The game would go back and forth for the remainder of the half with the Royals claiming the lead for good in the half with a three-point bucket from Cox at 2:21.

Queens saw its largest lead of the game 16 seconds into the second half when a three-pointer from Pettaway put the Royals ahead, 43-36. They would hold on to the lead for much of the half with the Tornados right on their heels.

Following two ties, Brevard would take a three-point lead on free-throw and layup from Madison Lenox with just under five minutes to play. Brevard stretched their lead out to as much as six points before a Pettaway jumper and a pair of Singletary free-throws cut the lead to two, 64-62, with 17 second on the clock.

Forced to foul, the Royals sent Lenox to the charity stripe where she extended her team's lead back out to four. Queens looking to score quickly, found a bucket from Singletary after the forward collected a huge offensive rebound. The bucket brought the Royals back to within two of the Tornados.

Down by two points, Queens needed a defensive stop to gain another possession for the chance to win. They got just that when Pettaway stole the ball from Lenox with three seconds to play, and then knocked down a three-pointer for the win just as time expired on the clock.

Brevard was led by Lenox who finished the game with 21 points. Katie Williams added 17 points.

The Royals are on the road next Friday at Claflin before taking a break for the holidays. Tip-off is at 1:30 p.m.
