Royals roll past Railsplitters into championship match

Box Score ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team defeated Lincoln Memorial University, 4-1, in the semifinal round of the 2013 Food Lion SAC Men's Soccer Championships advancing to Sunday's championship match at 1 p.m.

The Royals advance to face three-time tournament champion Anderson University. The Trojans defeated Mars Hill University, 1-0, by way of a penalty kick this evening to defend their title.

Senior midfielder Thiago Andrade led the Royals to victory recording his first hat trick of the season. His first goal would come 24:10 into the game when he beat a few defenders to get into the box and put the ball into the right corner of the net with a grounder. Not even 10 minutes later he would find himself on the receiving end of a cross from sophomore forward Erick Suarez. Andrade met the pass right in front of the net, slipping it past LMU goalkeeper Marcel Barwanietz for the 2-0 lead.

Queens would take that lead into the break after only allowing the Railsplitters to get five shots off compared to the Royals'10.

Out of the break, the Railsplitters would make things interesting in the 59th with a goal from Yuri Passos. Passos rebounded a block and fired the ball into the net from outside the top of the box to cut Queens' lead down to one.

Four minutes later, Queens' Suarez would answer taking advantage of a misplay by the LMU defense. Suarez was able to possess the ball behind their back line and rip it into the corner of the net to give Queens back its two-goal cushion.

Queens' final goal of the night would come from Andrade on a penalty kick after Suarez was taken down illegally in the box. Andrade would send Barwanietz diving to the right as his ball went to the left and into the back of the net for the 4-1 lead.

The Royals outshot LMU 27-19. Montrell Morgan collected five saves while improving his record to 15-2 between the pipes this season.

Sunday will be the first time that the Royals have reached a men's soccer conference tournament championship game since the 2007 season. Queens has not won a conference tournament since winning the CVAC tournament in 2001.
