CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's soccer teams wrapped up the regular season yesterday at Dickson Field as did every other conference member.Â
The men beat Lenoir-Rhyne 4-2 to secure the university's first SAC title in any sport. The Royals finished 9-2 in the SAC and 13-3 overall. Queens will host a quarterfinal match on Tuesday against eighth-seeded Catawba at 7:30 p.m. It's the first time that the Royals have hosted the opening round of a conference tournament since the 2007 season.
In their meeting on October 9, the Royals defeated the Indians, 2-1, with
Gersi Cilingiri scoring the game-winner with less than 10 minutes to play.
This season, the Royals scored 39 goals in 16 matches led by
Thiago Andrade's 27 points on 10 goals and seven assists.
Erick Suarez has also been a huge scoring threat, notching 24 points on nine goals and six assists.
Felipe Netto recorded six goals and three assists for 15 points, while
Yannick Fischbach (three goals and five assists) added 11 points.
Jonathan Onyeaka,
Gersi Cilingiri and
Ryan King chipped in with eight, seven and five points, respectively. Â
Goalkeeper
Montrell Morgan went 13-2 on the season, recording 48 saves and seven shutouts. He has a .79 goals against average.
Kenny Bonilla (seven goals and two assists) and Declan Stimson (seven goals and one assist) are leading Catawba's offense with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Corey Faughnan has 10 points, while Domhnall Minogue and Matt Wilkinson notched eight and seven.
Goalkeeper Frankie Cardelle has a 7-7-1 record with a 1.46 goals against average and four shutouts.Â
The women completed the season with a 5-4-2 league record, giving the Royals a sixth seed entering the tournament. They will travel to face third-seeded Tusculum College Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Pioneers have a 7-2-2 record after notching four wins in a row to close the season.
The Royals played to a 0-0 draw with Tusculum at home in their first meeting this fall.Â
Leading Queens' offense are freshmen
Kelli Gottry (nine goals) and
Caitlyn Rodrigues (seven goals, five assists), who each tallied 19 points. Gottry also led in game-winning goals with three this season.
Brooke Foil recorded five goals and six assists for 16 points, while
Ashley Osiecki chipped in with 12 points on three goals and six assists.
Brenna Kate Grass and
Logan Vitale added 10 and 8 points, respectively. The Royals scored  a total of 35 goals in 18 matches.
Jessyca Young started 15 matches in goal for Queens and compiled a 9-4-2 record with five shutouts and a 1.24 goals against average.Â
Taylor Lewis led the Pioneers offense with six goals and four assists for 16 points, while Amy Neltner added three goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Marissa Williams leads the SAC with 10 shutouts this season. She turned away a penalty kick in the two teams' first match-up this season.
