Men’s soccer takes down Anderson for first SAC Tournament title

Box Score ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team defeated three-time tournament champion Anderson University  this afternoon in the 2013 Food Lion SAC Men's Soccer Championship game for the Royals' first SAC Tournament title in program history. The Royals beat the Trojans 2-0 to earn their first conference tournament title since the 2001 season.

Entering today's game, the Trojans held an 11 game SAC Tournament winning streak that dated back to 2010. Additionally, Anderson had not given up a goal in over 700 minutes of action in the tournament.

Following a very physical but scoreless first half, the Royals would put two goals on the board in the second to earn their hard fought victory. The first goal came in the 60th minute when senior midfielder, and eventual Tournament MVP, Thiago Andrade crossed the ball into the box where sophomore midfielder Ryan King beat Anderson goalkeeper Bo Haug for the score.

Anderson, playing with their backs against the wall, would fire six shots at Queens goalkeeper Montrell Morgan looking to equalize the match. However, only two would be on goal and Morgan was there each time to collect the save.

Andrade would score Queens' insurance goal with less than a minute to play. The Royals would get behind the Trojan defense on a fast-break and sophomore forward Erick Suarez would find Andrade in the box following a long run for the senior. Andrade zipped the ball into the net for his 15th goal of the season. He currently leads the SAC in goals along with two others.

Morgan's season record improved to 16-2 in goal after notching five saves this afternoon. He faced 19 shots from the Trojans.

Suarez, Morgan and Kevin Anderson joined Andrade on the all-tournament team following today's match.

This is the first time since 2001 that the Royals have won the regular season championship along with the conference tournament title. Andrade is Queens' first tournament MVP since 2001 when Queens head coach Oliver Carias earned the recognition.

The Royals will await word on their postseason fates when the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship bracket is announced Monday at 7 p.m. on a live NCAA.com selection show.
