Cilingiri scores game-winner for Queens

Box Score SALISBURY, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team continued their spectacular play this season tonight on the road at Catawba College, winning 2-1 over the Indians for their ninth consecutive victory of the 2013 season. Queens remains undefeated in conference play at 6-0 while improving their overall record to 9-1. The Indians now sit at 5-3-1 on the season, and 2-3-1 in the SAC.

Following a number of shots from the Royals in first 35 minutes of action that were either turned away by Catawba's goalkeeper Frankie Cardelle or just off frame, sophomore forward Erick Suarez would net his ninth goal of the season with 35:35 on the clock to give Queens a 1-0 advantage. Senior midfielder Yannick Fischbach earned the assist. Catawba would try to knot the game up just before the half with a shot from Ian Orr, but Queens' Montrell Morgan tallied the save to keep his team ahead.

An intense second half would follow with both teams on the hunt to score, Queens looking for an insurance goal and Catawba looking to equalize the match. An unfortunate own goal would eventually tie the game at 1-1 in the 79th minute.

The Royals were awarded the opportunity to regain control of the game winning a corner kick just a few minutes later in the 81st. Off the kick from senior midfielder Thiago Andrade, Queens' towering center back, Jonathan Onyeaka, took a header that was saved by Cardelle of Catawba. A shot from Suarez right after was blocked and sent out of bounds giving Queens yet another set piece opportunity to score from. This time they were successful with senior midfielder Gersi Cilingiri scoring what would eventually become the game-winner. Suarez was awarded the assist on the play.

The Royals won 10 corner kicks to Catawba's three this evening.

With the win, Morgan remains undefeated in goal on the season at 9-0. He completed the 90 minutes with four saves.

Queens will be on the road again for their next game, when they take on Lincoln Memorial Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
